Hashtag: Coming OUT is Out

2 yrs ago my daughter spent a day at Camp Indy with her friends at the beach … when she came home, like any other parent, on cue I asked her about her day: what she did, who she played with, etc., you know the roll call we are required to ask but normally tune out … being 9 at the time you can imagine she had a lot to say and I was settling in to get a rundown of every granule of sand she touched … instead she proceeded to tell me about her new ‘friend’ she met … her beach buddy was a blonde girl that wanted to be a boy and she continued to tell me what she and HE did all day but never commented any further on HIS proclamation because it just didn’t matter to her … I was not surprised or shocked by her omittance or use of the proper pronouns but rather proud …

Now 11 and in middle school she has a friend that is openly gay … though I knew he was gay when I met him, you don’t live in Palm Springs for 30 years looking like Cher and not pick up a few things, she didn’t feel the need to tell me that he was gay because again it just doesn’t matter to her, however I didn’t know he was ‘Out’ until recently when she was telling me a story about his recent breakup …

But the point here isn’t that my daughter is any different than any other kid her age, because the fact is that, like technology, her generation doesn’t know a world where acceptance of the LGBT community by their peers and parents is required, their sexuality is just that, theirs, and is a part of them like the color of their eyes or skin …

So while the ‘grownups’ in the room are still fighting over these personal issues that don’t affect them or the rotation of the earth, perhaps this holiday season they should try to get an invitation to the kiddie table … they sure could learn a thing or two …

And remember, no matter your race, religion, sexual orientation, day you take out your trash or have your nails done, just because you don’t think it’s right, doesn’t mean it’s wrong, it’s just wrong for you …

Have a fabulous fucking weekend!
